Note on Gustar Structure: Word Order

  • Is there any variation in word order in gustar sentences, or does it always have to be A phrase→Indirect Object Pronoun→Verb→Subject, as in the examples?

  • The above order is most common, but yes, variation is possible:
    • The A phrase and the subject can be reversed; examples:
    • A mí no me gusta nada ese plato
      • Ese plato no me gusta nada a mí.
    • A Arturo y a su padre les gustan los programas
      • Los programas les gustan a Arturo y a su padre.
Note: The word order given in the examples in the main presentations will be called for be used in the exercises on this site; i.e., A phrase before verb, subject after.
