Presentation and Practice: Vowel Combinations
 

About Vowel Combinations:

►Two consecutive vowels form one syllable when a "strong" vowel (a, e or o) comes before or after an unstressed "weak" vowel (i or u).

►They form two syllables when a "strong" vowel is combined with a stressed "weak" vowel. (In this case, the weak vowel will bear an accent mark--see the relevant rule here.)

Two consecutive strong vowels form separate syllables:
