INTRODUCTION: WHAT ARE PERSONAL PRONOUNS?
- Spanish uses personal pronouns for the same reason English does--in order to avoid repetition of nouns.
- Anne lives in Brooklyn, but she (Anne) works in the Bronx.
- There are three museums in my city, and I visit them (the museums) often.
- As in verb conjugations, the pronouns come in "sets" of six:
- First, second and third persons, each with singular and plural forms.
- There are five distinct functions that Spanish personal pronouns serve, reflecting the roles that their referents play in the sentence.
