  INTRODUCTION TO IMPERATIVES  
 
  • Imperatives are verb forms used to give affirmative or negative commands, equivalent to Listen!, Don't fight, Let's eat, etc.
  • They occur in all persons, singular and plural, except first person singular (yo).
  • Derivation of imperative forms:

  • Affirmative
    • Regular: identical to the third person singular of the present indicative
    • Irregular: unique forms
  • Negative: identical to the second person singular of the present subjunctive

  1. Imperatives of compounds of decir are regular:
    • predecir→predice; bendecir→bendice, etc.
  2. Imperatives of compounds of these verbs are also irregular; accent required except for hacer compounds:
    • deshacer→deshaz; suponer→supón; mantener→mantén; prevenir→prevén, etc.

  • Notes:
    • In reflexive affirmative forms, final -s is dropped:
      • sentarse→sentémonos
    • Affirmative imperative is also commonly expressed with Vamos a + infinitive:
      • hablar→hablemos→vamos a hablar

    • Non-reflexive:
      • All verbs--drop -r from infinitive, add d
    • Reflexive: d is dropped in all verbs except*

  • Direct object, indirect object and reflexive pronouns (singly or in pairs) are attached to the end of affirmative imperatives:
    1. El artículo es interesante. Léelo.
    2. Expliquele la situación a Ramón.
    3. Siéntense Uds.
    4. Sentémonos.
    5. Quiero oír el disco. Préstadmelo, por favor.
  • They precede negative imperatives:
    1. No lo leas.
    2. No le explique la situación.
    3. No se sienten.
    4. No nos sentemos.
    5. No me lo prestéis.
